Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that involves difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, sometimes both. Although most people suffer an occasional sleepless night, patients with insomnia have difficulty sleeping on a regular basis. Certain lifestyle factors such as stress, emotional or physical pain, depression, jet lag or medications can trigger insomnia. Insomnia affects many people and can lead to other troubling symptoms, such as fatigue, low energy level, and a weakened immune system.

While insomnia is not normally considered a serious medical disorder, it can make life difficult, or even unmanageable. Traditional treatment for insomnia may include sleep medications, however, these medications often develop into dependencies and can cause unwanted side effects. Acupuncture may be considered as an alternative and natural treatment option for insomnia.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatments are safe, effective, and side effect free. Acupuncture can help to calm the nervous system, decrease subconscious stress and promote relaxation. Treatments can help to produce physical and emotional changes in the body that can promote sleep and regulate healthy sleep patterns. Most people find that after a few weeks of acupuncture treatment, that their sleep cycle has greatly improved.

The Acupuncture Method

Acupuncture works by giving a mild stimulation to the body, which in turn encourages a response. Very fine needles are inserted to various depths into strategic points on the body. Depending on the individual, the location of the acupuncture points may vary. After the needles have been inserted, they may be stimulated manually or by electrical stimulation, and a warming lamp may be used. Acupressure and therapeutic massage may also be performed to enhance treatment. Several treatment sessions may be necessary before patients experience results.
